Exclusive: Jennifer Lopez, star of Atlas, shares why she “cried” the first time she saw the Netflix film’s script.
Netflix has released Atlas, a science fiction story that delves into the interaction between AI and humans, starring Jennifer Lopez. The movie’s main performer, Jennifer Lopez, found great resonance with the subject, which is partly why she was so keen to join.
Together with co-star Sterling K. Brown, Lopez talked about working on Atlas in an interview with CBR’s Katie Doll. Lopez said she was drawn to the project because of its “beautiful” story; in the movie, she plays a data analyst who is deeply sceptical of artificial intelligence but may have to learn to trust it in order to save humanity. Lopez thinks that struggle is something that many people can relate to.
“For me, the kind of relationship between Atlas and the artificial intelligence was really interesting,” Lopez stated. “I cried when I first read the script and realised that, indeed, this is a science fiction movie. This film is action-packed. However, there’s a really lovely tale of how these two types of creatures unite and genuinely become more human. Both Atlas and Smith grow increasingly human. Many people can relate to the relationship of learning to trust someone after experiencing a horrible occurrence that left them never having trusted anything since they were children.”
“I remember the first time I read the script, I sobbed.”
Brown also touched on the topic of how artificial intelligence is becoming more and more popular. The actor brought up the discussion surrounding the pros and cons of using artificial intelligence (AI), pointing out that Atlas is intriguing since it looks at both sides of the argument, making it harder to determine whether or not AI is a good thing.
“The exploration of the topic is something that is very much at the forefront of our consciousness right now,” Brown stated. “I think we’re all talking about in our brains, to be able to craft a story that foretells the horror of what might be and the beauty of what could be. Is this a benefit or a drawback?
