Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson makes a reference to Squirrel Girl, a well-known Marvel character who hasn’t yet made her MCU debut, in a new promo video for Deadpool & Wolverine. The excitement surrounding Deadpool and Wolverine’s MCU debut and all the surprises that accompany it has grown thanks to trailers, TV advertisements, interviews, and a Deadpool & Wolverine popcorn bucket revelation.
A video titled “A truly Hugh-nique specimen” was published on X by the official Deadpool Movie account. Ryan Reynolds narrates the video, which follows a real-life wolverine in the manner of a nature documentary, characterising the animal as “kind of a boring animal” with a “pungent aroma”. After describing Hugh Jackman’s character as “an older male Wolverine, sadly sulking out of its den one last time, probably for a paycheck,” Reynolds remarks that he observes a dead squirrel and wonders whether “a Squirrel Girl team-up” would occur.
The allusion to Squirrel Girl, a heroine whose sense of humour is strikingly similar to Deadpool’s in the original comics, was immediately picked up on by Marvel fans. A live-action Deadpool and Squirrel Girl crossover has drawn interest from a number of X users. Strangely, Milana Vayntrub, who played the lead role in Marvel’s cancelled New Warriors series, was supposed to play Squirrel Girl.
