OVERVIEW
The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin acknowledges that one more season might not be sufficient and suggests that there may be more seasons in the future.
The second season of the adaptation promises to go further into the characters’ backstories and will cover events from the 2020 game sequel.
The Last of Us season 2 is expected to be groundbreaking due to the return of beloved cast members, the introduction of new characters, and extended stories.
Craig Mazin, the showrunner of The Last of Us, discusses the potential number of seasons required to finish the series. In the first season of the popular video game adaption, Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, accompanied Ellie Williams, played by Bella Ramsey, as she navigated the ruins of North America after a devastating outbreak of fungal parasites. A number of significant roles have already been filled for The Last of Us season 2, which will adapt the events of the 2020 video game sequel The Last of Us Part II. Filming is in progress right now.
Mazin and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann discussed The Last of Us’s future in an interview with Deadline. Mazin freely acknowledged that even a third season might not be sufficient to accurately adapt the original material, saying that the series will go on as long as there are fans who are interested in watching it, even though season 2 is only anticipated to adapt a portion of the second game. See below for Mazin’s response:
We’re taking our time and taking interesting detours, which we also partially explored in Season 1, so we don’t think we’ll be able to tell the story even in two seasons [2 and 3]. We believe that Season 3 will undoubtedly be substantially bigger, provided that viewers continue to tune in and that further television can be produced. Yes, Season 4 of the show might be necessary for the plot. One thing is for certain: I don’t see how we could tell the remaining parts of the story in one more season when Season 2 is finished.
What Will Season 2 of The Last of Us Cover?
Compared to the first game, The Last of Us Part II is Much Larger.
The amount of story covered in The Last of Us season 2 remains to be seen, as only seven episodes are announced. The Last of Us Part II surpasses both the 12 chapters of the previous game and the brief prequel DLC that was distributed throughout the nine episodes of season 1 by a significant margin, with 46 chapters shared between Ellie and Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever in season 2). Because of its new heroine and her story, this is true in terms of both worldbuilding and length. Season 2 might thus go up to Ellie and Abby’s initial confrontation.
The way The Last of Us will expand upon the game’s world, though, could confuse any conjecture about the plot of season 2. In addition to providing excised content with the introduction of Ellie’s mother, Ashley Johnson, Season 1 also rewrote the backstories of side characters Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) to create a far more interesting narrative than their in-game counterparts. There might be a tonne of new storylines to discover in season two and beyond with the addition of new people and factions.
In addition to attracting new viewers, The Last of Us season 1 delighted longtime viewers and helped expand notions of what a video game adaption could be. Because of this, season 2 looks to push the envelope even further by turning the relatively contentious second game into a multi-season epic. The Last of Us’s universe has never been richer thanks to Mazin and Druckmann’s earlier work, so fans are eager to see where season 2 will take Ellie and Abby’s stories.
