Venom: The Last Dance, which promises to be a spectacular farewell to Tom Hardy’s alien anti-hero, is the last film centred on the character. This was confirmed by Sony executive Tom Rothman.
Venom’s plot in the trilogy is concluded in this threequel, which focuses on his struggles in Let There Be Carnage and his fleeting cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Last Dance, which has a stellar cast and connections to the wider Marvel universe, is a film directed by Kelly Marcel and is scheduled for release on October 25, 2024.
Venom: The Last Dance’s major dread has been validated by Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman, ending months of conjecture over the movie’s meaning. The fifth entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe presently has no known plot, although set photographs seem to suggest that it will pick up just after Eddie Brock’s Spider-Man: No Way Home crossover cameo. In addition to Hardy, the ensemble cast of Venom: The Last Dance includes Clark Backo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Juno Temple in an unidentified lead role. Kelly Marcel, who wrote the scripts for all three films, is directing the film for the first time.
In a recent interview for the Cannes Film Festival, Rothman talked candidly about the studio’s future ambitions for its different franchises with Deadline. Specifically speaking to their Marvel offerings, Rothman revealed that Venom: The Last Dance will be the last film featuring Tom Hardy’s extraterrestrial vigilante. But the Sony executive promised that the last installment of the franchise “is going to be huge.”
Why Tom Hardy’s final Marvel film is Venom 3
The announcement that Venom: The Last Dance will be the last Hardy-directed Marvel film comes at a moment when Sony appears to be rethinking its ambitions for the SSU. Even with its attempts to connect the two, such as Hardy’s No Way Home cameo and Michael Keaton’s Morbius appearance, the franchise, with four films out as of this writing, has not been able to acquire the same momentum as the Marvel Cinematic Universe before it. See below for information on the box office and Rotten Tomatoes scores for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe films:
Title: RT Critics’ Rating
RT Audience Rating
Box Office
30% 80% of Venom $856 million
Venom: Allow for Chaos
$84% 57.7% $506.8 million
15% 71% Morbius $167.4 million
Madame Web 12% 57%
$100.3 million
Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from reviewers because to their uneven tone and scriptural flaws, the first two Venom films were regarded as huge cinematic office triumphs. Although Sony’s decision to invest more on Hardy’s films made sense, fans haven’t quite taken to the idea of developing a full cast of Spider-Man characters without really seeing the webslinger in action. The overwhelming negative feedback that Morbius and Madame Web received appears to have played a significant role in Sony’s decision to perhaps leave the SSU.
Even if Hardy’s run as the Lethal Protector comes to an end with Venom: The Last Dance, the SSU may still continue after this, perhaps taking a break as the studio works to correct its earlier mistakes. The long-gestating Kraven the Hunter is set to release in theatres shortly after Hardy’s film. Despite fierce competition at the box office, if the film proves to be a critical success, it could instill some confidence in the studio to continue the franchise. Hardy might eventually make his way back, as producer Amy Pascal is still keen to move on with the equally difficult Sinister Six film.
