The GOT universe’s shared pain between dragon and rider emphasizes how mysterious dragons are.
A fleeting scene from the second season premiere of House of the Dragon features Rhaenyra and Syrax carrying on an emotional theme, and it’s amazing. Season 2 of House of the Dragon begins with Rhaenyra journeying to Storm’s End to grieve for her slain son, Lucerys, following the horrific conclusion of the first season. After the Greens have taken the lead in the fight, she is seen in this scene thinking about how to proceed with the conflict, with the Dance of the Dragons now unavoidable. However, the HBO prequel series shines in the minutiae, and there’s more to dissect.
There are a lot of dragons in House of the Dragon, including several well-known ones that will be introduced in season two, such Moondancer and Sunfyre. Because of its unusual gold scales and the she-dragon’s devoted bond with Rhaenyra, Syrax is arguably the most famous character in the series. Though she’s not as large as the much larger Vhagar or even Daemon’s Caraxes, a strong link between dragon and rider can make all the difference.
Syrax Mirrors House of the Dragon Season 1 by Sensing Rhaenyra’s Anguish Over Luke’s Death
HOTD Investigates Dragon and Rider’s Emotional Bond
Syrax weeps with Rhaenyra in the season 2 premiere when she discovers her son’s body, demonstrating the strength of their relationship. Though it’s not the first time, it’s heartbreaking to see the animal upset along with her rider. The show intercuts to show Syrax in agony during Rhaenyra’s miscarriage in the first season finale, highlighting the synchronicity between dragon and rider. In the world of George R.R. Martin’s books, the mystery surrounding dragons is incredibly captivating, and House of the Dragon does an excellent job of examining it.
It’s unclear what the dragons in House of the Dragon are thinking because they aren’t sentient like the dragons in many other fantasy settings. They do, however, appear to bond with their riders much way dogs or other tamed animals might. An additional dimension to the picture is that, given that Syrax is depicted in season 1 as hatching eggs, it is widely assumed that Arrax, Lucerys’ dragon, is Syrax’s son. It would also make sense for the eggs to end up in Rhaenyra’s offspring. Thus, Syrax might be grieving for both Rhaenyra and her own son, who perished in the same battle.
The Significance of Illustrating Rhaenyra and Syrax’s Mutual Anguish and Loss
The Dragons’ emotions are equally important because they play crucial roles in the Civil War of the show.
In the world created by George R.R. Martin, the bond between dragon and rider is a profound phenomena. It is solely determined by an unexplainable emotional tie that can only be severed by death, and it is not quantified by any scientific criteria. The emotional weight that Rhaenyra and Syrax’s shared suffering gives the dragons as distinct characters is immense, further deepening the emotional impact of the war and strife in House of the Dragon.
